The town of Santa Aplonia is named after it’s patron saint Apolonia de Alejandria. This wide ceremonial garment is woven on a back strap loom and used as a “sobre” huipil (it is worn on top of the everyday blouse). It is used by the Texel or for ceremonial or special occasions. The warp background is woven with white hand cotton and dyed with natural dyes. The piece shows a 4 selvedge ends. The opening for the arm holes, the opening for the head and the designs have geometric embroidery made with mercerized cotton. The curiosity of this town is to hand embroider its patterns in the same technique as the brocade, as if they were woven. The designs may represent pots of water, corn plants and lightning.
