The image has masterly carved curly dark brown hair; beautiful brown glass eyes, blush in his cheeks and an angelic look on his face with painted eyebrows. His round chin is highlighted by blushed cheeks and his thin lips are closed around a small and delicate mouth. Chubby arms and legs common in toddlers give this child an innocent look. This piece belonged to a Religious Brotherhood or “Cofradía” and many people came to adore him. Notice the darkened hands and feet that were touched by the believers when they prayed to him. Candle fire also helped to give this extraordinary patina to this carving. Please notice the broken finger in his left hand and a restoration made to his left foot. The piece has many different layers of paint, a sign of its age; it is a tradition in Guatemalan villages to paint the images when their day is honoured. The devotion to the Child began with the Wise Men and continued through stories of saints to whom the Child appeared. This Mid-1,800’s Guatemalan Santo shows the outstanding skill of the artist who most probably was commissioned to create this beautiful, proportioned example of the classic Colonial Style carvings from Guatemala.
