Spaniards brought the dance to Guatemala telling tall tales about their victory over the Muslim Invasion. The Dance is sometimes called “12 Pares de Francia” -12 Pairs of France, in a reference to Charlemagne and the Catholic overcome. The Christian side is represented with blond, white-pale skin characters; meanwhile the Moors are portrayed with black hair and red-dark skin. This piece has extraordinary carved black painted eyebrows; notice the graceful blue glass eyes highlighted by tiny eyelashes. The forehead has a rare wrinkled expression that gives the mask a dramatic look. The mouth has gorgeous red lips; the dark blue chin represents the recently shaved beard of the character. Notice the funny moustaches and blushing cheeks. The piece has different layers of paint and extraordinary smooth patina that tell us the long journey the piece has gone through. The mask maker signed the piece with his initials JFMC.
