The word “Gracejo” means clown; Indigenous people mocked these abundant characters during the colonization. The traditional “Gracejo” masks have a big smile on their faces, extraordinary curly hair and sometimes an idiotic look. Notice the gracefully carved teeth and big red tongue that gives the piece the classic Gracejo look. Gold decorated teeth demonstrate the character’s social status, he is a wealthy man. Notice the golden eyebrows, brown painted eyes and the pale blue painted chin that represents the recently shaved beard of the character. Great hair carvings are highlighted by curls. Red dots on cheeks indicate sunburn. Patina on the back denotes use.
