This character represents a Spanish soldier; a captain or a simple combatant. During the Dance, they will fight against the Mayan Warriors. Notice the golden painted carved hair and moustaches. The gorgeous look of the character is highlighted with huge blue glass eyes and tiny painted eyelashes and eyebrows. The exquisite ability of the artist is demonstrated with excellent hair lines and stylistic nose and slightly sunburned skin. The many different layers of paint have small fissures and cracks that were caused during the ceremonies that the piece overcame; the age can also be determined in the smooth backside patina. The upper right side of the mask has a missing section. Please notice that the piece is very tiny, most probably a child’s mask; only men perform in the ceremonies and they like to keep the tradition going by bringing their young ones to the fiesta.
