The word “Gracejo” means clown; Indigenous people mocked these abundant characters during the colonization. The traditional “Gracejo” masks have a big smile on their faces and sometimes an idiotic look. Notice the gracefully carved teeth that give the piece the classic Gracejo look. Gold decorated teeth demonstrate the character’s social status, he is a wealthy man. The bright golden painted high-relief curls, fine sideburns and stylistic moustaches made of this piece, a reference for future representations of the character. Sunburned ears, nose and cheeks, red lips, black painted eyes and golden painted eyebrows and eyelashes give this Conquistador a beautiful look. The skin has many layers of old paint and fractures all over that have been fading away, because of time and use, and created a curious look for the mask. The nose and lower chin have damaged / unpainted sections caused by constant use in the ceremonies. The piece has an extraordinary gorgeous look, but it is the backside patina that tells the many adventures and events that this piece has overcome.
