Dancers dressed with red and black costumes will dance around the bonfires. The character is not necessarily evil; some pieces will be decorated with diverse symbols or attributes to represent different kind of personalities, good or evil. This piece has a distinctive carving; a frog comes out of the devil’s forehead. Many of the Guatemalan Devil Masks have animal figures as decorations. A frog for instance, represents wisdom, so this Devil Masks has “wise thoughts”. The piece has magnificent carved hair, curly moustaches and a rare triple beard; the mouth has masterly carved teeth that, combined with the leather tongue complete a scary look. Notice the red wooden horns attached to the top of the head that decorate this incredible devil mask. Great patina on the back shows signs of use.
