Ceremonial Conquistador Mask used during the Dance of the Conquest. This character represents a Spanish soldier; a captain or a simple combatant. During the Dance, they will fight against the Mayan Warriors. Blond hair, sideburns and moustaches are nicely carved. Notice the gracefully golden painted eyebrows and eyelashes that highlight the beautiful brown glass eyes. Sunburned cheeks and nose denote the European origin of the character. Golden teeth symbolize the wealth of the character that tells us the social status of the character. The ancient Mayas used to decorate their teeth with jade, nowadays gold is the preferred material. Patina on the back denotes use.
