Ceremonial Wizard Mask used during the Dance of the Conquest. This character represents the Ajitz, a shaman that can tell the future by throwing his magical beans. People will bring offerings to him like food, beverage, cigars or money and in exchange he will read the future in his oracle. The red color of his skin has a cosmic significance for the Mayan Culture. During the dance he foresees the dangerous coming of the Spaniards, he warns the Mayan Kings of the upcoming battle. Axes decorate the character’s forehead as a symbol of his warfare prediction; when he dances he also holds an axe in his hand and in the other he holds a smaller representation of himself, the Ajitz Chico. The exquisite carved hair with two axes show that this mask was meant to be an Ajitz since the beginning. Notice the gracefully painted eyelashes that highlight the beautiful brown glass eyes. The piece has an extraordinary gorgeous look, but it is the backside patina that tells the many adventures and events that this piece has overcome; definitely a Museum quality item. Notice the "BA" signature seen twice on one side of the piece’s interior of the famous Morerias in Totonicapán. The last dancer who used the mask wrote his name "ENRRIQUE".
