The town of Santa Apolonia is named after its patron saint Apolonia de Alejandria. This elegant white huipil is not woven. It is a piece of white cotton cloth with its distinctive embroidered patterns. The curiosity of this town is to hand embroider its patterns in the same technique as the brocade, as if they were woven on a back strap loom. The opening for the arm holes, the opening for the head and the designs have geometric embroidery made with mercerized cotton. The designs may represent pots of water, corn plants, feather serpent and lightning.
