One of the most fashionable villages in Guatemala, is Chichicastenango. Always introducing new materials, patterns and colours on their textiles. This unique Huipil is not the exception. It is woven in 3 panels on a back strap loom, with a brown background showing four selvedge ends. All the patterns are brocaded; representing a double headed eagle on the center panel; and the feather serpent with planets or stars in the side panels. The double headed eagle is part of the main design from the huipil. The panels are joined with a hand embroidered randa (joining band) and a cross stich. The round neck is cut out and decorated with black velvet, forming the rays of the sun. On each space of the sun’s rays several ¼’s coins are sewn in the textile, to give a unique stylish touch. When the huipil is open, this design can clearly be seen.
