The mask is highlighted by masterly hair carvings, thick eyebrows and finely painted eyelashes. Silver painted teeth are a sign of wealth that tell us the social status of the character. The ancient Mayas used to decorate their teeth with jade, nowadays gold or silver are the preferred materials. Patina on the back denotes use. On December 7th people celebrate the famous “Quema del Diablo” – Burning of the Devil, a purification ritual before Christmas Celebrations. Dancers dressed with red and black costumes will dance around the bonfires. The character is not necessarily evil; some pieces will be decorated with diverse symbols to represent different kind of personalities, good or evil.
